The incident occurred on Crain Highway just prior to Trade Zone Avenue around 11:05 a.m., PGPD said.

The suspects — later identified as Xavier Stewart of Clinton and Noreon Moody of Bowie — fired at the officer, who was inside an unmarked police car while in the area as part of an investigation, according to police. A pursuit had been authorized, though they were able to flee.

The officer was not harmed, police added.

The vehicle used in the shooting had been reported stolen.

Stewart and Moody were taken into custody several hours later, where a search of Moody’s backpack turned up the weapon linked to the shooting.

Moody was charged with attempted murder, firearms offenses, and related charges. Stewart is charged with the unauthorized use of a stolen vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 301-772-8960.
